The Communist Party of India Maoists has been on a spree of murder and destruction in different parts of India for the past 60 years.
The million strong Indian army plus the Police in every State and the para military forces have not made a dent in this internal war. Why?
The CPI (M) forces are popularly known as Naxalites. Who are truly Naxalites. Are they an underground communist movement, a secret army or foreign terrorists? None.
The Naxalites cannot be easily put down because they are made up of ordinary citizens of India and recruited from academic staff of University colleges, school- teachers, Government servants of middle and lower ranks and even policemen. They gather in the night, murder and destroy in the night and are back at their civilian desk come morning.
There exists a fertile field for recruitment into this movement - the urban recruit is possibly disgusted with the corrupt political system, the academics with lack of freedom in their area of work, the Government servant boiling mad against the bureaucracy, and the policeman frustrated with lack of due promotion. Naxals are not a law and order problem but one of socio political implications.
With more and more disappointments and frustrations setting in at all levels of society, Non-Governmental Agencies must study the problem at base roots, establish an interchange of ideas and lead the Naxals into constructive activities. Is this possible or is there another solution?

Indian Government will not fall!
Indian Government is safe and will not fall. All thanks to the Left parties who blustered and threatened the UPA in power only to be faced with the 'for once strong' Prime Minister. Dr. Manmohan Singh challenged the Left that they could withdraw support and so be it.
Calling themselves allies of the UPA government, they had been a stumbling block from the word go on progressive proposals of the government, in foreign investment in Insurance industry, privatisation of Public Sector Units, foreign investment in retail trade etc. They got away with it since the government, until now, did not challenge the Left.
Following such victories, the Left challenged the Indo-US 123 Agreement, but the Prime Minister stood fast - "No renegotiation".
This face off, made the media use page after page in announcing possibilities of an early election. An early election would have been good for the country. With 94% Indians supporting the Indo-US Agreement, in an early election the Left would have been wiped off, the BJP would have lost many seats and the Congress could have come back to power without the need for allies.
Now this cannot be! The Left realises the danger in early elections with their own party in Bengal weakened by riots in Singur and the shooting against civilians in Nandigram costing 44 lives. In Kerala they are absolutely disunited within their party. Faced with facts, the Left has changed its tune. Now they tell the Congress, "We are not demanding rejection or stoppage of the Agreement. We are only suggesting a pause"!!!
The threat has been faced squarely; the government will not fall; and there will be a smile on every Brokers' face at the Mumbai Stock Exchange on 27th August.

INDIA – US 123 AGREEMENT
INDIA – US 123 AGREEMENT
The BJP and the Left parties are making a hue and cry about the 123 Agreement between India and the US.
BJP’s stand can well be understood and tolerated. They were the originators of this agreement that could not be finalised and concluded when the NDA was in power. The noise that they raise now is out of frustration and pure politics.
The objections of the CPM have a different connotation (Forget the CPI since they do not count for much in Indian politics).
The Indian communists did not raise their voice against the major defence agreements India had for decades with the communist USSR. Even today whatever nuclear agreement India may propose with Russia will be acceptable to our Left.
Similarly, if India should propose a nuclear agreement with China on the same lines as the 123 Agreement with the US, the Left in India will surely rejoice.
As per the US-China 123 Agreement (signed in 1985 and ratified by the US Congress in 1998), China did not get fuel supplies; China did not obtain reprocessing rights; and China had accepted inspections. (Mr. George Fernandes – No one was shot in the head in China for such an agreement!!!)
On all counts the Agreement between India and the US is advantgeous to India. Yet the Left objects!
Is it possible and perhaps probable that the Indian Left is acting under the orders of China to sabotage the India-US Agreement thus ensuring China remains the sole major power in Asia?

While ignoring the fatwa passed by a Muslim Cleric in Kolkatta promising "Unlimited reward for killing Taslima" it must be stressed that the awarding of death penalty is vested only with the Courts of Law.
I certainly do not agree with the satement of Taslima, "Just like they have a right to express their views, I, too have a right to vent my views".Yes, she has a right to vent her views in her own country but not in India where she is given refugee status.
She cannot have the right to introduce religious controversies in our countrty.Taslima must understand the right to free speech is guaranteed to Indian citizens and not to those allowed to live here as refugees.
It is high time the Government of India cancelled her visa.
